Field notes · Icom IC-705 · 8 min
The IC-705 does not need a laptop. Your logger should admit that.
Icom shipped a portable all-band radio with CI-V, Bluetooth, and a spectrum display. Then most of us put a computer next to it anyway. The 705 plus a phone is already a station. The missing piece is a log that speaks CAT and still writes QSOs when the cable drops.

What the 705 already knows
Frequency. Mode. A decent S-meter. HF, VHF, UHF, and a satellite-capable portable in one body. Asking the operator to retype the VFO into a logbook is how QSOs get the wrong band in ADIF.
CAT in the pocket means the phone is the second front panel. Not a remote-desktop session to a shack PC you did not bring.
- Frequency and mode follow the radio.
- A tactical meter on the phone for noon sun on the 705’s screen.
- HF through SAT in one log, because that is how the radio is built.
Park and summit without a USB brick
POTA with a 705 is a common kit: radio, wire, battery, phone. If the logger requires a Windows CAT program, you just added a laptop, a table, and a point of failure. Phone CAT plus an offline log is the actual portable station.
Spots can drive the VFO when CAT is up. When it is not, you still log. The 705 will outlive a flaky Bluetooth adapter. The log has to as well.
SAT on the same radio
The 705 is not an HF-only shack toy. ISS and LEO work from the same panel. A logger that pretends every QSO is 20 m SSB will fight you on 437.800. SAT_NAME, SAT_MODE, and a pass timeline belong next to the VFO, not in a separate satellite app you open too late.
Field trial for 705 operators
Log73’s IC-705 profile exists because this radio is how a lot of us leave the house. If you already activate with a 705 and a phone, the field trial is the right place to break the CAT path on purpose and see if the log still stands.
Questions
Can I control an IC-705 from a phone?
Yes. CI-V over Bluetooth or a serial adapter can carry frequency and mode. The log should follow the VFO so you are not typing 14.062 during a pileup.
What if CAT drops mid-QSO?
The QSO must already be local. Radio control is a convenience. The log is the product. A dropped Bluetooth link must not roll back contacts.
Log73 is in field trial.
Request a slot. Bring a radio.
