LOG73

Field notes · Offline-first · 7 min

A logbook that needs the internet is a website. Field ops need a log.

QRZ Logbook, Club Log, LOTW — those are destinations. They are not the sheet on the picnic table. If your only logger is a cloud form, you will discover it the first time a park has no tower.

Two different jobs

Confirmation services prove a QSO later. Field loggers capture it now. Mixing them is how people lose a run to a spinner. Use LOTW. Use Club Log. Do not use them as the only copy of an activation in progress.

Offline-first means the device is the source of truth. Sync is optional and later. If the product cannot explain what happens when you are in airplane mode, it is not a field logger.

Failure modes of the cloud sheet

Captive portals at campgrounds. LTE that exists on the road and not at the pavilion. Browser logouts. A PWA that still phones home for DUPE. Multi-station Field Day that assumed the club Wi-Fi would hold.

  • Every QSO written locally as entered.
  • Snapshots that restore after an app kill or a dead battery.
  • Export without signing in.
  • Sync that does not silently overwrite a second operator’s log.

Paper is honest. It is also slow.

Paper does not need a tower. That is why it still wins. It also does not DUPE at type speed, does not export Cabrillo, and does not survive a creek. The job of an offline logger is to be as stubborn as paper and as fast as a contest program.

What to demand from a field logger

Local writes. Recovery. ADIF and Cabrillo from the device. Parks, summits, and SAT fields already in the export. Cloud when you say. Log73 is built on that contract and is in field trial — not a store page pretending the cloud already scaled.

Questions

Is an offline logbook against LOTW or Club Log?

No. Those services take ADIF. The field log writes locally and exports. The cloud is a replica you update when you have a path.

Where should QSOs live during an activation?

On the device, encrypted, with recovery snapshots. Not in a browser tab that dies when the captive portal appears.
