Field notes · Satellite operations · 7 min

If it went through a bird, the ADIF has to say so.

A voice QSO on the ISS is not 2 m FM in the park. LOTW, Club Log, and anyone who awards satellites will fight a log that stuffed the pass into a comment field. Track the sky. Log the pass. Put SAT fields in the record.

Passes as a timeline, not a hobby calendar

AOS, TCA, LOS, max elevation, footprint. Alarms that respect quiet hours in a park. If you open a general satellite app and then a logger, you will miss AOS while switching. The birds that matter for amateur ops are a short list: ISS voice, AO-91, SO-50, and a few you pin. Not a science-fair TLE dump.

Doppler is an operating problem

Handhelds and CAT radios that can follow still need coaching. Uplink and downlink belong next to the log, because that is what you are actually doing with your hands. A frequency you copied from a PDF in the parking lot will be wrong by the time you key.

  • Pin the birds you actually work.
  • Cache TLEs. Do not require LTE at AOS.
  • Write SAT_NAME and SAT_MODE as first-class fields.

The log is how the QSO survives

Crew contacts, FM LEO, linear transponders — they are all satellite QSOs. If your logger only knows HF contest fields, you will export garbage. Grids of both ends, SAT mode, and the bird’s name. LOTW-clean on the first upload is the standard, not a bonus.

Field trial for people who actually look up

Log73 treats satellite ops as a first-class mode, not a novelty screen. If you already chase ISS with a 705 or a handheld, the waitlist is for you.

Questions

Which ADIF fields matter for satellite QSOs?

SAT_NAME and SAT_MODE at minimum, plus grids of both ends when you have them. PROP_MODE SAT is the usual companion. Comments are not a schema.

Can I predict ISS passes offline?

Yes, if recent TLEs are cached on the device. Fresh elements sync when you have a path; the next-pass engine should still run without one.
